Moehau is the northernmost mountain range on the Coromandel Peninsula. Its name, Te Moengahau-o-Tamatekapua, means ‘the winding sleeping place of Tamatekapua’. Tamatekapua was the commander of the waka, Te Arawa, and was buried on the mountain. It is home to a diverse and indigenous range of vegetation and wildlife such as the Archey's frog (whose young hatch from eggs), brown kiwi and wetā. At its highest point Moehau rises up to 892m.
