Motutere, meaning floating island, was bestowed this name by Chief Ruamano a descendent of Tama-te-kapua who captained the waka Arawa from Polynesia around 1350. Māori explorers of this time believed that the summit was inhabited by supernatural beings called patupaiarehe and so would avoid it after dark. Motutere, also known as Castle Rock is a volcanic magma plug that has remained behind long after the softer rock of the volcano around it has eroded away. It stands 525 metres and is located in the south-east of the Coromandel.
