Moehau is home to supernatural beings called patupaiarehe who are rumoured to live in the swirling mist at the summit of this great sacred mountain. They are described as blonde or red haired with very pale skin and always without tatoo. These beings are invisible to the human eye except for when they play music on their kōauau or sing their waiata, then they can be seen appearing from the mist. 
 
In pre-colonial times Moehau along with much of the Coromandel ranges, all the way through to Te Aroha would have been covered in beautiful native bush with trees such as tawa, mataī and kauri.
